Have You Got a Water Leak?

Follow these straightforward steps to ensure you don't have a water leak on your property, or if you do, catch it nice and early before it becomes a much bigger job.

  • Walk around your home and ensure all taps are turned OFF, including garden taps and reticulation. Remove hoses from garden taps to make sure the tap is not dripping.
  • Leave isolation valves in the ON position if connected, i.e., taps connecting to toilets, emergency shut-off valves inside cabinets for mixers and dishwasher, and washing machine taps (if connected).
  • Find your water meter. If you are having trouble with this, visit this page online and type in the details required for a map of where to find your water meter. https://www.watercorporation.com.au/Help-and-advice/Bill-and-account/Rates-and-charges/Property-water-rates-search
  • Make a note of your water meter's numbers by taking a photo of the face of the meter with the lid open. If your meter has a dial with a red pin in the centre and make a note of where this dial is pointed at the time of the photo. One full rotation of the red pin is equal to 1 litre of water usage.
  • Set a timer for 5 minutes, and remember not to open any taps or flush the toilet during this time.
  • Return to the water meter and take another photo of the face on the meter, just like you did before the 5-minute timer. Compare photos to see if there has been a change in the position of the red pin on the dial or the last numbers on the right.
  • If there is a difference at all, then it is likely you have a leak somewhere on the property and will need to contact a licensed plumber to locate and repair it. Don't hesitate to use Billabong Plumbing & Gas to tend to your problem and take care of it for you.
  • We will also submit a Leak Allowance form for you free of charge on completion of the job in order to get you a refund from the Water Corporation effective on your next billed cycle.

Common small leaks can occur at the back of the toilet bowl, dripping taps, faulty relief valves on hot water systems, reticulation, or simply at the water meter itself.

Did you know that a cheeky leak at the back of your toilet bowl leaking from the cistern tank atop the toilet could be wasting up to 9,000 litres of water every year?

This equates to roughly 3 minutes in the shower EVERY DAY!
So get on top of those pesky unnoticed leaks and enjoy an EXTRA 3 minutes in the nice hot shower – ON US!
